Robert L. Kendall Best Paper in Transactions of the American Fisheries Society

Transactions of the American Fisheries Society is a highly regarded international journal of fisheries science that has been published continuously since 1872. It features results of basic and applied research in genetics, physiology, biology, ecology, population dynamics, economics, health, culture, and other topics germane to marine and freshwater finfish and shellfish and t

heir respective fisheries and environments.

2022 Best Paper

Title: “Pacific Lamprey Translocations to the Snake River Boost Abundance of All Life Stages

Doug Hatch accepts the 2022 Robert L. Kendall Best Paper Award at the 2023 Annual Meeting in Grand Rapids.

Authors: Jon Hess, Thomas Delomas, Aaron Jackson, Michael Kosinski, Mary Moser, Laurie Porter, Greg Silver, Tod Sween, Laurie Weitkamp, and Shawn Narum

Issue: Transactions of the American Fisheries Society 151:263–296

Mercer Patriarche Best Paper in the North American Journal of Fisheries Management

The North American Journal of Fisheries Management is intended to promote communication among managers, the journal addresses the maintenance, enhancement, and allocation of fisheries resources. Its contents chronicle the development of practical monitoring and management programs for finfish and exploitable shellfish in marine and freshwater environments. Contributions relate to the way species, habitats, and harvests may be managed to protect and enhance fish and fishery resources for societal benefits. Case histories of successes, failures, and side effects of fisheries programs help convey practical management experience to others.

2022 Best Paper:

Title: “Avian Predation on Juvenile and Adult Lost River and Shortnose Suckers: An Updated Multi-Predator Species Evaluation“

Authors: Allen Evans, Quinn Payton, Nathan Banet, Bradley Cramer, Caylen Kelsey, and David Hewitt

Issue:  North American Journal of Fisheries Management 42: 1561-1574

Best Paper in the North American Journal of Aquaculture

Formerly published as The Progressive Fish-Culturist, the journal was renamed the North American Journal of Aquaculture in 1999 to reflect the expanded importance of aquaculture in the 21st century. The journal carries papers on new research and practical experience in all areas of intensive and extensive fish culture. This international journal carries papers on new research and practical experience in all areas of intensive and extensive culture of fish and other aquatic organisms that are of importance not only to North Americans but also the global aquaculture community. Topics include, but are not limited to, nutrition and feeding, broodstock selection and spawning, drugs and chemicals, health and water quality, and testing new techniques and equipment for the management and rearing of aquatic species.

2022 Best Paper:

Title: Activation of Henneguya ictaluri Actinospores by Nonictalurid Fish Species, with Implications for Management of Proliferative Gill Disease in Catfish Aquaculture

Authors: Bradley Richardson, Charles Mischke, Graham Rosser, Ethan Woodyard, Cynthia Ware, David Wise, and Matt Griffin

Issue: North American Journal of Aquaculture 84: 313-324.

Best Paper in the Journal of Aquatic Animal Health

Published under the guidance of the American Fisheries Society’s Fish Health Section, the Journal of Aquatic Animal Health serves the international community of scientists and culturists concerned with the health of aquatic organisms

Darbi Jones accepts the 2020 Best Paper in Journal of Aquatic Animal Health award at the 2021 Baltimore Annual Meeting.

. It carries research papers on the causes, effects, treatments, and prevention of diseases of marine and freshwater organisms, particularly fish and shellfish. In addition, it contains papers that describe biochemical and physiological investigations into fish health that relate to assessing the impacts of both environmental and pathogenic features.

2022 Best Paper:

Title: “A Perspective: Molecular Detections of New Agents in Finfish — Interpreting Biological Significance for Fish Health Management”

Authors: Theodore Meyers and Nora Hickey

Issue:  Journal of Aquatic Animal Health 34:47-57.

Best Paper in Marine and Coastal Fisheries

Marine and Coastal Fisheries: Dynamics, Management, and Ecosystem Science publishes original and innovative research that synthesizes information on biological organization across spatial and temporal scales to promote ecologically sound fisheries science and management. This open-access, online journal published by the American Fisheries Society provides an international venue for studies of marine, coastal, and estuarine fisheries, with emphasis on species’ performance and responses to perturbations in their environment, and promotes the development of ecosystem-based fisheries science and management.
