Early Career Fisheries Education Award

To recognize excellence in early to mid-career educators

The Education Section recently approved the creation of a new section-level education award, in addition to the current society-level Excellence in Fisheries Education Award.  This new award is intended to celebrate excellence in early to mid-career educators.  Our rationale is that the current Excellence in Fisheries Education Award favors individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to fisheries education over the course of their career, but early career educators are at a disadvantage simply due to a shorter time frame across which they have worked.

Criteria for this award are:

  • To be eligible, individuals must be within 10 years post-graduation, and be at the rank of instructor, assistant professor or associate professor, or the equivalent rank within their institution. This award is meant to include educators in colleges and universities as well as in non-traditional settings such as outreach or continuing education.
  • Evidence of innovation in fisheries education will be among the foremost criteria, as will passion for education. Efforts to promote diversity and inclusion will also be highly considered.
  • Student ratings of teaching and institutional awards for teaching will also be among the primary criteria.
  • Success in mentoring graduate and undergraduate students will be recognized, but less weight will be placed on the number of students completed and their eventual career path.

The recipient of this award will be recognized at the annual section meeting and will receive a $500 cash award and plaque.

The deadline for nominations is April 1, 2022. Nominations should be sent to Dan Hayes, Chair of the Excellence in Fisheries Education Award Committee at [email protected].
