The Hutton Junior Fisheries Biology Program is a paid summer internship and mentoring program for high schools juniors and seniors, and is sponsored by the American Fisheries Society (AFS). The mission of the Hutton Program is to stimulate career interest in fisheries science among young people from underrepresented groups. Each student selected to the program is matched with and mentored by a fisheries professional while getting hands-on experience in a marine or freshwater setting. Those who successfully complete the program receive a $3,000 scholarship as well as valuable work experience in an exciting and rewarding field. Because the principle goal of the Hutton Program is to diversify fisheries professions, minorities and females are strongly encouraged to apply.  Known as “Hutton Scholars,” students in the program:

• Participate in habitat protection, restoration and management projects
• Learn about conservation issues and the importance of healthy aquatic systems
• Gain understanding of what being a fisheries biologist involves and of career opportunities in the field
